    Salmon Fishing

Richard went out on the harbour in his boat recently and caught three Salmon and four decent sized Kahawai. The largest of the salmon was over 25 pounds, so Richard was very pleased. From all reports, now would be the best time to start salmon fishing if you haven’t already, as they are certainly out and about in the harbour.

We have the new Ridgeline Deluge Anorak on special at $159, normally $329. These jackets are waterproof, rated to 10,000mm, breathable and seam-sealed.
It seems for every salmon caught in the harbour, there are five kahawai, this frustrates salmon fishermen, and many people don’t realise just how good eating kahawai are. The key is to bleed them as soon as possible so the meat doesn’t spoil, then you can rub brown sugar into the flesh and hot smoke them like a trout.
For those of us that don’t have a boat, there are plenty of salmon also being caught straight off the wharf, this one was caught last Sunday, cheers for the photo, Don! There were ten salmon caught last Saturday too, which is apparently a record for the wharf.
The now have a range of the popular Savage soft baits in stock. We predict these being very effective, especially the luminescent ones when used at the canals near Twizel.
Look for us at the Southern Fields Days at Waimumu, 10th, 11th and 12th of February. This year is set to be the biggest yet, and with 38,000 people turning out to the last two-day sale, this year is expected to be a big one. We will be set up at site 448.

New shooting rests that attach to the outside of a car door without any damage or permanent modifications. A foam bar supports the fore-stock of the rifle, and height is adjustable, which allows for shooting uphill or downhill. The base of the rest hooks over the outer part of the door, so the window can be opened and closed with it still attached. It is designed be used standing, from outside the vehicle. Perfect for farmers and pest controllers. Kits available for $130.
There has been a product recall on Winchester XPR rifles for an unspecified reason. If you know anyone who has one, please ask them to get in touch with wherever they purchased it from.
Tristan has left his role as our shop manager to pursue a career in butchery, we wish him all the best and hopefully we will see him out and about on the river, and in the hills.

    Winter deals and ducks

With winter on many people’s minds, we are selling a lot of waterproof clothing and thermal gear, as well as the ever-popular Yaktrax. In two weeks we will be at the winter Forbury Sports Sale running from July 2nd-5th, keep an eye on the Facebook page for more info.

Best second-hand gun deal: Tikka M595 in .308. Very good condition, and older model of Tikka, preferred over the T3 by many, complete with Bushnell scope, $1100. More info here

Despite being later in the season, Tristan and Dick went duck-shooting again last weekend, and between the two of them and a mate, managed to bag 50 ducks. Tristan (pictured in the new Veil camo) ran out of ammo during shooting and was unable to use anyone else’s, as he was the only one with a 20 gauge. Lessons learned; 1: you can never have too much ammo, and 2: pick a calibre that is widely available, so you can borrow from your mates.
We have in store the reprint of the great heli-hunting novel Hawks, which sold out in 1998. A great story on the venison wars in Fiordland. We have autographed copies in store.
The Ridgeline Monsoon jackets are proving very popular as temperatures continue to drop, especially after recent Dunedin rainfall. Fortunately we have plenty of these jackets left and they will remain at the special price of $160, down from $259.99. The Monsoon jacket is waterproof and seam-sealed, meaning they do not leak where the material is joined, as other ‘waterproof’ jackets will.
We now have a range of SOG knives, including spring assisted folding knives and revolving ones with two blades back to back. All SOG knives that are currently in stock are half price, and the ones that don’t sell here in the shop will be out at the next Forbury Sale.

The Yaktrax have been very popular lately, as they are every year as winter grows nearer. For those unfamiliar, Yaktrax are like snow-chains for your shoes; they stretch over your regular footwear and provide excellent traction on ice and frozen pavement by means of a steel coil on the underside of your shoe. We stock a full range of sizes in both the ‘Walk’ and ‘Pro’ models, at $45 and $59 per pair, respectively. The ‘Pro’ features a stronger natural rubber and velcro strap across the top of the shoe.
Bushnell Legacy binoculars now in stock. The 10-22×50 model gives the user the option to zoom in, unlike most bino’s which are fixed-power, as well as being rugged and waterproof, currently available for $349.
We have the Ridgeline Razorback jackets on sale. The Razorback jacket (pictured) is a wind-proof, shower-proof soft-shell jacket with a removal hood, we currently have the black and charcoal version in stock, for just $109, despite the recommended retail of $199.
We also have the Ridgeline Mallard Anorak jackets on sale, usually $129, now just $99, these 3/4 length zip jackets are a laminated, waterproof shell, with a hood. With more clothing deals in store and on the way, be sure to keep an eye on our website or come on in and see us, remember; we are open 7 days.
We have a very nice new left-handed CZ 527 rifle on the shelf, for $1239, normally $1799. The CZ 527 has a traditional Mauser action, with a single set trigger, a set of CZ rings and a five round detachable magazine. For more info on this rifle, check out our website

This week’s best second hand rifle deal

Good condition Browning BAR semi-automatic chambered in .270, it has been re-barrelled with a Shilen barrel, which is as-new. Rings, swivels, and ‘Limbsaver’ recoil pad are included, this rifle should prove to be very accurate.

  • Duck-shooting results plus new boots and jackets.

Opening morning was Saturday. Dick and Tristan (pictured below on the left with his ducks) were out shooting, as they do every year. Tom was away on a long range shooting trip and was able to hit targets at 1600 and 2000 metres, while Selwyn held the fort in the shop. Business predictably died down on the weekend as many people were out in their maimai’s.

Tristan and two of his buddies shot their limit of paradise ducks, as well as a few mallards on opening morning, but this seems to the exception to the rule with most shooters in the Otago region struggling with clear skies and good visibility for the ducks. Dick and friends bagged 38 on Saturday in Southland, but there will be plenty of opportunity left in the season to get out and about. We still have 20% off second-hand shotguns, but we have had a good run on them so get in quick if you want to take advantage of this deal.
We now stock the Hunters Element Echo boots, an excellent medium-duty boot, lightweight, with a medium cut for ankle support, suede leather upper and Vibram sole.
Ridgeline Monsoon jackets are now in stock for only $160, with a recommended retail of $269. These are great waterproof anorak jackets that are seam-sealed and have neoprene cuffs to keep water out.
Ridgeline Spiker jackets are essentially a kids version of the very popular Torrent jacket, normally $99, we now have them in stock for $79 in either camo or olive.

The deer are already beginning to roar

It’s very nearly that time of year again!

    Shotgun sale
As usual for this time of year, we have a lot of second hand shotguns that duck-shooters have traded in. We need to clear some of these guns in order to make room for new stock, so we are offering 20% off all second hand shotguns, and 5% off all new shotguns*. This offer will only run as long as we have a surplus of guns.

*Excluding guns for sale on behalf

Selwyn and friends took Nigel Latta out hunting recently, and they bagged a 150lb boar!
    E-Category safes
We are confident that we have the cheapest new 5-gun E-cat safes in the country, for those that want to get their endorsement or simply want a more robust safe for firearms or other valuables.
    Duck shooting license offer
This year we are offering a Northridge camo pack-away jacket at half price with Game-bird Licenses purchased, normally $99.90, now only $69 in store and just $49 when you purchase a license. These jackets are waterproof and fold into a small pouch, handy to keep in your backpack or glove box in case of unexpected rain.

The Famous Forbury Sale is on again, 9th-12th of April at Forbury Park Raceway. We will be there, alongside our friends from Otago Sports Depot, Alex Campbell Menswear, and Smith’s Sport Shoes.

  • Duck-shooting and deer-stalking

With duck-shooting season and the Roar both fast approaching, we are gearing up for what is one of the busiest times of the year, for hunters and for us. Don’t put off that new purchase, especially if you need a shotgun, as there is always a last-minute rush on them leading up to opening day. Stop in to pick up your game-bird license, and grab some free shotgun pattern targets.

Whether you are waiting in the Maimai or stalking through the bush, the Ridgeline Torrent jacket will keep you warm, dry and quiet, without breaking the bank. The Torrent jackets have 6 pockets, a detachable hood, are fully water proof (10,000mm), seam sealed and windproof. We have plenty of the olive green jackets, normally $259, now only $119, while stocks last.
Ridgeline Apache boots are still on special while stocks last, these boots have sold very well recently, and we are set to run out soon, so get in quick. The Apache boot is made of Nubuck leather and is a comfortable, all-round waterproof, mid-cut boot. These boots are set to sell for $249, but we still have them at the introductory price of $155.
We have Buffalo River camouflage blinds available, single seat blinds (pictured) at  $159 and two seat blinds at $199, these blinds are light and easily portable. The folding seat is comfortable and features a cup holder for your thermos, and there is plenty of room in front of the seat to lean your shotgun, and the flap at the front allows you to shoot out without lifting the blind.
Something for the ladies; the Ridgeline Womens Ribbonwood fleece tee, highly visible and very warm. These tees normally retail for $29.99, we have pink camo and blue camo available for just $19. For those unfamiliar, blue camouflage has become popular in recent years as it is more easily visible to the human eye than orange, especially at dawn and dusk.
Remember we are open 7 days and you can find out more about us, our products, and services on ourwebsite
  • New .300 AAC Blackout rifles

The relatively new .300 AAC Blackout cartridge has become very popular, especially in the USA. The round was designed to give similar power to the 7.62x39mm round, but still fit in an AR-15 magazine, the solution was to neck a .223 case up to .30 calibre. This means that the .300 Blackout can be loaded into any AR-15 .223 magazine, with the bolt face and receiver being the same, .300 Blackout uppers are available for most AR’s. The .300 Blackout has become famous for being one of the few centrefire rifle rounds that is availablesubsonic from the factory, meaning when fired through a suppressor the noise is almost non-existent. These subsonic loads are very effective at close range, with trajectory and energy almost identical to the .45 ACP pistol round, while the high-velocity ones are more powerful and flatter shooting than 7.62x39mm rounds, approaching light .30-30 loads. We now have .300 Blackout rifles in stock, with more rifles and ammo on the way, watch this space. More info on this cartridge
    Below: three .300 Blackout rounds, a .223 and a 7.62x39mm.

The CVA Scout has proved a popular selling rifle, and now we have them in stock chambered in .300 Blackout, blued, with a synthetic stock and threaded for a suppressor, scope mounts are also included. We will have Ruger rifles in .300 Blackout arriving soon and Remington ones available shortly.
The NZ Salmon Anglers Fishing Competition is coming up on the 28th of Feb and 1st of March. Entries are still available through us at the shop, this should be a good season for it.
The Roar is fast approaching and we still have a great deal on new Browning X-Bolt rifles; at $1499 we reckon we have the best price in the country for a new synthetic stainless X-Bolt. For more info check out ourwebsite
Cicadas are hatching right now, and recently fly fishermen have been having a lot of luck with cicada pattern flies as a result. Flies like the one pictured above are available here in the shop, regular flies are $2.80 each but be sure to check out our $1 flies on special. Selwyn caught a few fish near Mavora recently using flies like the above.
